Sarga 37

In Sarga 36, we saw Hanuma presenting the Signet ring of Rama to Sita. After that the poet describes Sita as one "rāma saṁkīrtana vīta śōkā ". That means one who is rid of sorrow after hearing the praises of Rama. Though the thought that Rama is in deep sorrow in her absence is disconcerting, Sita was rid of her sorrow at least momentarily after hearing the praises of Rama.

In Sarga 37 Sita's mind quickly pivots on the needed actions. Actions that are needed for uniting with Rama. Those actions should also be done in an appropriate way. Appropriate for the name and fame of Rama. That was the thought uppermost in the mind of Sita. In that mode, we see Sita in her true nature as the saha dharmacāriṇi', a lifelong companion.

We also see the ego-the free form of Hanuma, and the mindset of a true 'saha dharmacāriṇi, in the conversation of Sita and Hanuman in this Sarga,

Now we go through Slokas of Sarga 37.

||Sloka 37.01||

sītā tadvacanaṁ śrutvā pūrṇacaṁdra nibhānanā|
hanūmaṁta muvācēdaṁ dharmārthasahitaṁ vacaḥ||37.01||

sa|| sītā pūrṇacaṁdra nibhānanā dharmārthasahitaṁ tadvacanaṁ śrutvā hanumaṁtaṁ idaṁ vacaḥ uvāca||

sītā pūrṇacaṁdra nibhānanā -
Sita who has a face like that of a full moon
dharmārthasahitaṁ tadvacanaṁ śrutvā -
having heard words full of meaning and righteousness
hanumaṁtaṁ idaṁ vacaḥ uvāca -
spoke to Hanuman as follows.

"Sita who has a face like that of the moon, having heard the words full of righteousness, spoke to Hanuman as follows." ||37.01||

||Sloka 37.02||

amr̥taṁ viṣasaṁspr̥ṣṭaṁ tvayā vānarabhāṣitam|
yacca nānyamanā rāmō yacca śōkaparāyaṇaḥ||37.02||

sa||vānara tvayā yaccarāmaḥ na anyamanā yacca śōkaparāyaṇaḥ iti bhāṣitaṁ (tat) amr̥taṁ viṣasaṁspr̥ṣṭaṁ||

Tilaka Tika says - yaccanānyamanā iti vākyaṁ ākhyāyatē tat amr̥taṁ| yacca śōkaparāyaṇamiti vākyaṁ ākhyātē tat viṣaṁ|| It says that ' not thinking of anything else other than getting back Sita' is like a nectar ; Lost in sorrow is like a poison.

"Oh Vanara ! The words you said that Rama is not thinking of any other thing and that he is immersed in sorrow, are like nectar mixed with poison." ||37.02||

aiśvaryē vā suvistīrṇē vyasanē vā sudāruṇē|
rajjvēva puruṣaṁ baddhvā kr̥tāṁtaṁ parikarṣati||37.03||

sa||kr̥tāṁtaḥ puruṣaḥ rajjvā baddhvā iva suvistīrṇē aiśvaryē vā sudāruṇē vyasanē vā parikarṣati ||

"One having great fortune or steeped in terrifying adversity
'Fate will drag him like one tied with a rope as it were." ||37.03||

Rama Tika says- | aiśvaryē vyasanēvā vidhyamānaṁ puruṣaṁ rajjvā baddhvēva kr̥tāntaḥ kālaḥ parikarṣati tābhyāṁ anyatra karōti ati arthaḥ| ētēna rāvaṇa vidhvaṁsaḥ avaśyaṁ bhavati iti sūcitaṁ| Even if one is rolling in riches or drowning in sorrows, fate will drag him along like one tied with a rope in its own direction, meaning that it can take you in opposite direction. Comment is that this is an indication of eventual destruction of Ravana despite all his riches.

vidhirnūnamasaṁhāryaḥ prāṇināṁ plavagōttamaḥ|
saumitraṁ māṁ ca rāmaṁ ca vyasanaiḥ paśya mōhitān||37.04||

sa|| plavagōttama prāṇinām nūnaṁ vidhiḥ asaṁhāryaḥ | vyasanaiḥ mōhitān saumitriṁ māṁ ca rāmaṁ ca paśya||

" Oh Best of Vanaras ! Surely it is not possible to overcome fate. See how Rama , Lakshmana and myself are afflicted by sorrows". ||37.04||

Here, "Fate is all too powerful" may sound like that it is indeed impossible to overcome fate for a normal person. What we understand from Sundarakanda, and Hanuma is that, following an appropriate teacher, it is surely possible to stand up to the fate.

One more thing.

We know that Rama is the incarnation of Vishnu, and Sita is Lakshmi, the consort of Vishnu. But they also fall prey to the vagaries of Fate. Therein lies the central truth of Ramayana. Rama, though Rama may be an incarnation of Vishnu, faces the difficulties like any other human being and moves forward showing the way.

Sita's comment is also seen as indication of future. Govindaraja in his commentary says. 'aiśvaryē vyasanē vā vidyamānaṁ puruṣaṁ rajjvā baddhvēva kr̥tāntaḥ kālaḥ parikarṣati| tābhyāṁ anyatrakarōti ityarthaḥ| ētēna rāvaṇa vidhvaṁsaḥ avaśyam bhavēt iti sūcitam|

Sita's reference to "aiśvaryē vā" meaning "even those in great fortune", is taken as reference to Ravana; and that he is doomed despite the great riches.

śōkasyāsya kadā pāraṁ rāghavō'dhigamiṣyati|
plavamānaḥ pariśrāṁtō hatanau ssāgarē yathā||37.05||

sa|| sāgarē hatanauḥ plavamānaḥ pariśrāṁtaḥ yathā rāghavaḥ asya śōkasya pāraṁ kadā adhigamiṣyasi ||

vibhīṣaṇēna ca bhrātrā mama niryātanaṁ prati|
anunītaḥ prayatnēna na ca tat kurutē matim||37.09||

sa|| bhrātrā vibhīṣaṇēna mama niryātanaṁ prati prayatnēna anunītaḥ | tat matiṁ na kurutē||

"(Ravana's) Brother Vibhishana made efforts to advise my restoration. Such thought has not been agreed to." ||37.09||

That Vibhishana made efforts is a seed for the stories that will follow. Vibhishana intervening in Ravana's order to kill Hanuma further reinforces his role. Hanuma remembers all this and does not to torch Vibhishana's house, even as whole of Lanka is burnt.

mama prati pradānaṁ hi rāvaṇasya na rōcatē|
rāvaṇaṁ mārgatē saṁkhyē mr̥tyuḥ kālavaśaṁ gatam||37.10||

How does Sita know all about Vibhishana ? Sita clarifies here saying Vibhishana's daughter told her, and the daughter was encouraged by her mother to tell her. This places whole of Vibhishana family in a different category. We heard the same in Trijata's dream too.

asaṁśayaṁ hariśrēṣṭha kṣipraṁ māṁ prāpsyatē patiḥ|
aṁtarātmā hi mē śuddhaḥ tasmiṁ śca bahavō guṇāḥ||37.12||

sa|| hariśrēṣṭha patiḥ kṣipraṁ māṁ asaṁśayaṁ prāpsyati| mē aṁtarātmāca śuddhaḥ tasmiṁśca bahavaḥ guṇāḥ |

Rama Tika says- hi yataḥ mē antarātmā śuddhaḥ tasmin rāmē ca bahavō guṇāḥ ataḥ patiḥ rāmaḥ kṣipraṁ saṁprāpsyatē|

Rama Tika says- daitya vadhē vyavasāyasagāyuktaṁ utsāha sahitaṁ viṣṇuṁ iva tava darśanē kr̥taḥ utsāhō yēna taṁ girirājasya mūrdhani āsīnaṁ purandaramiva āśramasthaṁ rāghavaṁ adyaiva drakṣyasi|

Here while Hanuma is showing his true from to Sita, we also get a glimpse of his true form. He does feel insulted by Sita's words. He could have responded with an injured ego, that injured ego could have lit a fire of anger. What we see is the ego-less form of Hanuma. He heard Sita. Understood what she does not know. Then showed his true nature. This is also the form of a teacher. Lack of ego is one of the most important attributes of a teacher.

Kalatravati is one to be protected. With one to be protected on his side, Hanuma will always have more concern for protection, and may be unable to focus on battling the Rakshasas chasing them is the import.

Here Sita says, 'tat tasya sadr̥śaṁ bhavēt'; That is indeed very appropriate for Sita. Why? Hanuma could have made her join Rama in a moment. But as the husband of Sita, Rama killing Ravana and freeing her from her captivity is the honorable way. That is Sita's thought. That may mean increased duration of her captivity. It may result in increased period of separation from Rama. That suffering is minor in Sita's view. Honor of Rama is clearly at a higher pedestal. Surely the added suffering is worth the cause.

Ramayana is also known as a "sītāyāḥ caritaṁ mahat". Themes in this Sarga Indeed, makes the case for Ramayana as "sītāyāḥ caritaṁ mahat". The age-old tradition of wives standing up for their husband's honor, probably has its roots in Sita's devotion to Rama. In that traditional mold wives keep doing many things for their husbands ; 'tat tasya sadr̥śaṁ bhavēt' is a thought of many wives over the ages. The husbands too should think on the same lines 'tat tasya sadr̥śaṁ bhavēt'.

With the same thought Sita tells Hanuma. "Oh, best of Vanaras, Bring him along with Lakshmana, and the army of Vanaras here quickly. Oh, Chief of Vanaras make me happy"

That is how Sita conveys her wish to Hanuma.

In this context Ramayana Tilaka says, "cirakālaṁ śōkakarśitāṁ (māṁ) rāmasya atra āgamanē harṣitāṁkuruṣva| samūla sakala nāśanēti bhāvaḥ|"."I am suffering with sorrow for long time.
make me happy with Rama coming here" It means that Sita wants the destruction of the Rakshasas, who are the cause of her sorrow?

Govindaraja in his commentary also refers to Sita 's wish. " kuruṣvamāṁ vānara vīra harṣitām","make me happy etc. by bringing Rama and Lakshman here".
He says in his commentary ||anayā bhaktyā upāyāntaraṁ svarūpaviruddhaṁ bhagavatprāptau sa evōpāya iti darśitaḥ|| "offered a not so legitimate means of obtaining the 'Darshan 'of Bhagavan, Sita stuck to the proper way of realizing Bhagavan"; Realization by any means is not the mantra. The process shall always be appropriate. This touches on the age-old issue of means and ends. "Ends by any means is not OK. Means are as important as the ends or goals"

Thus, ends the thirty seventh Sarga of Sundarakanda in Shrimad Valmiki Ramayana

ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē ādikāvyē vālmīkīyē
caturviṁśat sahasrikāyāṁ saṁhitāyām
śrīmatsuṁdarakāṁḍē saptatriṁśassargaḥ ||

Thus ends the thirty-seventh Sarga of Sundarakanda in Shrimad Valmiki Ramayanam.
